Doctors of Optometry are highly trained eye and vision care providers, who have completed undergraduate degrees and at least four years of specialized biomedical training at an accredited school of optometry. They must comply with strict licensing and continuing education standards. Utah’s scope of practice laws need to be revised to align more closely with modern practice modalities and the laws already being successfully employed in states across the country.

Despite unfounded rhetoric by the opposition, other states already utilizing the same procedures have seen no increase in adverse patient outcomes from this type of scope expansion. By recognizing the full suite of care Doctors of Optometry are trained to provide and ultimately allow Utah patients greater access to qualified eye and vision care.
